Keep an Eye on these Car Parts to Prevent Accidents

Distracted driving is the most common cause of car accidents. However, it is not the only cause of the thousands of car accidents that occur annually in Virginia. Issues with various parts of the vehicle cause many of these car accidents. That’s why it is so important that you perform regular maintenance on your car. Here are four car parts that you should keep an eye on in order to prevent accidents.

1. Tires

Very dangerous accidents that can occur, happen due to issues with your vehicle are tire blowouts. Tire blowouts generally happen when your tires are under-inflated or worn out. Generally, tire blowouts occur when you are driving faster, which often compounds the damage and injuries they cause. Also, when a tire blowout occurs, it can result in debris, which can create more risk to motorists driving on the same road. To prevent tire blowouts you should check your tire pressure and tread about once a month.

2. Headlights/Taillights

While your headlight and taillights are not difficult to replace, many people don’t even know that the bulbs have burnt out until it’s too late. Most accidents occur at night, which prevents you from seeing others and others from seeing you. Since you can prevent these accidents, you should check your headlights and taillights regularly.

3. Windshield Wipers

Windshield wipers are much more important than many drivers realize. When working properly they help to maintain your visibility through rain and snow. However, if your wipers are not properly working, the lack of visibility can result in a serious accident, damages, and injuries. That’s why it’s important to replace your wipers once every 6-12 months. You may know it’s time to replace them should you hear them squeak, smear, or streak.

4. Brakes

The biggest problem associated with car parts is brake failure. While brakes have vastly improved over the years, they still cause great damage when they are faulty. For this reason, you should always check your brakes regularly and have your tires rotated at least once every six months. When you take your vehicle in for a tire rotation, it may be a good opportunity to have your brakes checked.
