Cari Lyn Pierce focuses her practice on day-to-day transactions affecting closely-held and family businesses. She represents clients in the acquisition or sale of businesses, with experience related to asset transactions with affiliated commercial real estate components. Ms. Pierce handles creation of new business entities, assisting clients with organizational documents, such as operating agreements, to address each client’s particular needs. Ms. Pierce also represents landowners in relation to proposed solar farm leases. She advises clients regarding potential risks typical of the solar farm context and also assists in the negotiation of the leases. Ms. Pierce also practices in the area of tax controversy, representing individuals and small businesses before the Internal Revenue Service and the Virginia Department of Tax. Ms. Pierce began practicing law in 1993 and has been with the Firm since 2015. Her complimentary areas of practice allow her access and insight into very personal issues and relationships as she gets to know individual taxpayers, but also exposure to complex commercial matters and transactions.
Ms. Pierce graduated from Harvard University with a Bachelor of Arts and obtained her law degree from the University of Georgia School of Law. While in law school, she was inducted to the Order of the Coif and served as the Notes Editor and Editorial Board for the Georgia Law Review. As an attorney, she has represented her clients in numerous buy-sell transactions, assisted families and landowners in navigating the new field of solar farm leasing, and aided taxpayers with compliance with federal and state tax laws.
Cari Lyn is licensed to practice in all courts in the Commonwealth of Virginia and in the State of North Carolina (though her license is now inactive), and before the United States Tax Court. Among other professional associations and memberships, Ms. Pierce is a member of the Tax Section of the Fairfax County Bar Association. She has volunteered extensively on local Boards handling issues related to zoning, local development and historic preservation.
Cari Lyn was born in Silver Spring, Maryland, and was raised in Rockville, Maryland, where she attended Rockville High School. She currently resides in Herndon, Virginia. In her spare time, Cari Lyn enjoys hiking, quilting, fishing, and gardening.
